Did your insurance tell you that you have to go to their preferred and/or recommended body shop for an estimate?  Well, the simple answer is no, you have the freedom to go to whom you choose to have your repairs done.  But why would insurance companies have “preferred” or “recommended” shops in the first place?

An article from AngiesList.com explains:

“Most insurance companies have repair contracts with body shops in your area. Choosing the insurance company’s repair shop has benefits for the insurance company, which has negotiated lower labor and material rates, as well as parts discounts with those shops. The shop will have met the insurance company’s equipment and training requirements. Insurance companies will also require their shop to provide a lifetime warranty.”

The insurance companies give their claims representatives goals.  If you have decided to choose your own auto body shop, the representative may try to sway you from their decision.

“They may explain that it will take up to a week before an adjuster will be available to write an estimate on your car,” says Angies List.  They could go further by stating that their company will not warranty the repairs if you don’t have your car repaired at their shop.”

Bottom line is that any modern and reputable shop will provide a warranty no matter who is picking up the tab, so don’t be intimidated.  You have to right to choose who you give your business to, and to whom you allow to do the repairs on your own vehicle.

You also don’t have to run around town doing the work for the insurance company. At Excel Auto Body, we inspect the vehicles, estimate damages, and get the claims moving every day.
